The Kinetics and Mechanism of Nucleophilic Addition Reaction of Carbon-carbon Double Bond


Abstract
The rate equation for the nucleophilic addition reaction of n-butylmercaptan to 3, 4dihydroxy cinnamic acid over wide pH range was obtained.
The mechanism of the nucleophilic addition reaction is quite different in acid and basic media: the addition of mercaptan started as a molecule in the acid media below pH 6, while above pH 9, as a mercaptide ion.
From the rate equation, the rate equation, the rate constant for n-butylmer-captide ion at basic side was obtained numerically as 3.13 X 10^3M^-2 sec.^-1, and for n-butylmercaptan at acid side 4.13 X 10^-3M^-1 sec.^-1 respectively.
